Boxing Classes
This is not a Tae Bo or cardio kick type of class that you often find in most health clubs!
While our classes focus on the science of boxing and kickboxing, there are a number of concepts from the martial arts that are integrated into the training sessions. Some of our students train for competition, but the majority do not, and their focus is on conditioning and self-defense aspects. Heavy bags, speed bags, jump ropes, focus mitts, and various calisthenics are used to train individuals, but the classes teach participants about posture, breathing, and movement. In addition to learning how to throw punches and kicks, students learn how to deliver blows with other parts of their bodies. Understanding how to move your body in such a way as to maximize the most power is a tremendous experience. In fact, participants often talk about the remarkable sense of release that comes about from this type of activity.
Trainers who teach our boxing and martial arts based fitness classes possess black belts or have been trained in boxing/kickboxing for many years. Each instructor brings many years of training and influences to the class. Classes are safe and there is no dangerous contact between individuals. All students wear protective hand wraps and boxing gloves. Classes last sixty minutes, and great attention is given to the technical nature as well as the conditioning aspect of the movements. We were the first fitness facility in Western New York to offer classes of this nature and numerous instructors from other health clubs have received training from us over the years and brought elements back to their classes.
Mixed Martial Arts and Catch Wrestling Classes
Our MMA classes are taught by our head instructor Corey Norman. He is an undefeated professional MMA fighter. All but two of Corey's professional fights have been in Canada under the TKO organization. Corey began his training at the age of five under his father who was an Olympic Greco-Roman wrestler during the 1980's. While just a teenager, he decided to forgo scholastic wrestling in favor of Catch Wrestling, and the latter has been his base art the last twelve years. Corey has also trained in western boxing, Muay Thai and several other arts over the last seven years.
Students in these classes will have an opportunity to learn a great range of techniques that can be used for competition, or self defense. Boxers and martial artists who have trained extensively in striking arts expand their knowledge base by practicing the grappling components of this diverse program, while BJJ, Judo, scholatic wrestlers and classical ju-jitsu practitioners have adapted many of the subtle transition techniques that come out of catch and Greco-Roman wrestling. The makeup of the classes have run the gamut of competitive athletes to folks who simply want to get in shape and learn self defense.
There are opportunities for students to be competitive with the skills they learn here. In the last year, ten of our students have medaled at state submission wrestling tournaments. Others will be entering local MMA tournaments in 2011.

Ju Jitsu has taught me a tremendous amount of submission techniques and I love the art, but my exposure to catch wrestling has expanded my knowledge base by helping me understand how many of the movements and attempts are chained together.

When I first started working with Corey in grappling I had a background in Brazilian Ju Jitsu, with the addition of catch wrestling and Greco roman wrestling into my training I have learned a series of new submission attempts that flow with my previous training and improved my ground game.

I have trained in martial arts and boxing for over six years but never had any exposure to grappling. Corey is an excellent teacher and makes the class challenging but not overwhelming... in no way do I feel out of place. Corey does everything possible to ensure the safety of all participants. I can safely say that anyone regardless of their knowledge base would reap great benefits from this discipline.

I have trained in martial arts and boxing for well over twenty years. I can definitively say that anyone would gain from Coreys unique experience and exceptional talents. Those with previous grappling experience would learn new things to enhance their ground game and others without any background would enjoy the enthusiasm and passion that Corey brings to the mat.
